Golf Swing Fundamentals

By: Mike Schlacter

All of my golf playing buddies have recently been talking about golf swing fundamentals. I looked into this when I first started playing and did not think that I really needed to revisit it but I did so, just so that I could better join in with their conversation about it. I assumed that I would learn nothing new and that I was really wasting my time even bothering about it.

However, it is amazing how much I have learnt since looking over them again. It is also great to be able to discuss them with my buddies as we do not normally discuss our techniques and things with each other and this has actually really helped our games. I had forgotten how important the fundamentals are how the grip, postures, pivot, hand and arm relationship, alignment and mental game are all such important parts of the game. I had in fact completely forgotten about some of them altogether – which is a bit embarrassing to admit!

Until I looked back and jogged my memory I had almost forgotten how much the game relies on all of these factors being used together and also how just a small slip in one area can affect the whole of the game. I guess I had just got bogged down with improving my strength and assuming that would help me to hit the ball harder and forgotten about working on any other parts of my game.

I suppose it is tempting to just work on the areas that you know need work and ignore the rest of the golf swing fundamentals. I guess that I didn’t really realize how important it is to look at the swing as a whole and try to work on many areas at once rather than just hoping that improving one part will help the game as a whole. It has actually made me totally change the training that I do for the game.

I have changed some of the exercises in my warm up and warm down and I do more work on my posture than I used to. I read more about different techniques in the hope that I can improve and when I find something that I like, I try to incorporate it into my game and am concentrating hard on my mental approach and general attitude towards the game. As well as trying to beat my golfing buddies, I also try to improve my score every time that I play.

This means that even if my buddies have an off day, I still am striving hard to score well. I have found that by working on these new areas it has given me a new enthusiasm for the game and I am really enjoying myself. I didn’t realize that I was not enjoying the game that much until I changed my attitude towards it.

I hope that by revisiting the golf swing fundamentals on a regular basis I can keep up with this new attitude and keep improving my game. Why don’t you give it a try and see whether it can help your game too?
